Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti is located in New Delhi, India. The Samiti runs system of schools across the country to provide education to the talented and merit students. It is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi and offers education to the students from classes VI to XII standard. It mainly aims at identifying talented children in rural areas of India and providing them with best education along with best residential school system. The former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi suggested this idea and the JNVs were established in every district of India to provide excellent education to the rural students. The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) was registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. Navodaya Vidyalayas are run by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), which is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of School Education and Literacy, Govt. of India. The Executive Committee manages all the affairs like allocating funds to the Samiti.
At first the government policy is to establish only one JNV for each district. However considering the highly populated districts and backward classes in the society the government has increased the number. First two Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas were established during 1985–86, at Jhajjar (Haryana) and Amravati (Maharashtra). With time the strength increased asking for the establishment of more and more JNVs across the country. The Samiti is headed by the Minister of Human Resource Development. At present the Samiti has eight regional offices in various areas for the administration and monitoring of Navodaya Vidyalayas under their jurisdiction.
NVS organises talent test for the students annually so as to find out the merit ones and to provide them with free education until 12th grade. It offers this only to the talented students that qualify the talent test it conducts. There is no other way to make it to study in the Navodaya Vidyalayas. The entrance test is conducted for class 6 i.e., students should have minimum qualification of class 5 to start with NVS. The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) is conducted so as to provide admission to the merit students. It is a talent test designed to ensure that all the rural students get into it easily without facing any hassles. Students usually enter into JNV at class 6, but the exam authority provides entrance to the students in Class 9 through lateral entry test. For class 6 entrance test, students should only belong to the district where the JNV is opened.
Candidates applying for the merit exam must be studying in Class-V in a Government/Government-Aided in the same district where the student seeks admission. The candidates seeking admission into NVS of class 6 must be within the age group of 9 to 13 years. Students cannot apply for JNV Selection Test for a second time, under any circumstances. The exam body provides 75% of the seats in a district to the candidates belonging to rural areas and remaining seats will be allotted to the candidates from the urban areas of the district. The authority permits 1/3 of the seats for girl students as a part of reservation. Also, a provision for reservation of 3% seats for disabled children is given by NVS. The exam is conducted in around 20 mediums. The class VI exam will be conducted on subjects like mental ability, arithmetic, and a language paper.
